Major “Host Defense” Concepts: Microbiology, Immunology, Clinical Infectious diseases, Infection Control (role of public health). Immunology: Learn the branches of the immune system; Realize the role of physical barriers in preventing infection; Understand importance of normal flora; Understand how defects in the immune system leads to disease; Learn the components of the immune system; Understand how these components interact. Microbiology: Intro to types of pathogens/organisms; Understand how common organisms identified; Gain familiarity with terminology of microbes and common pathogens; Recognize which pathogens usually associated with some common infectious diseases.
