Integration Foundation Self-Guided Module: Impact of Technology and Financial Literacy
Activity
e-Learning Module
Impact of Technology on Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Medicine: Over the past decade, evolving technology and research have impacted medicine. Many physicians and healthcare facilities are reliant on electronic medical records (EMR) and technological processes to improve patient care. In addition the culmination of research studies and findings are present in everyday medical communication and involve pressured time sensitive application in order to support patient care. These new advances may contribute to the efficiency of modern health care, however they can negatively impact the development and maintenance of the physician-patient relationship. Within the hidden curriculum of medicine, this relationship now includes the electronic medical record and evidence based research practice. Medical students need to acknowledge the presence of these influences on interpersonal practice as well as methods for learning adaptation. Students must be aware of the need to develop strategies for coping with the explosion of medical and scientific data. Financial Literacy: recent literature review demonstrates financial literacy as an educational need for Canadian medical students. In order to address this learning deficit, medical students can benefit from increased awareness of financial issues to promote budget planning and fiscal responsibility for residency and beyond.
