- To practice a history and physical exam for GI bleed and abdominal pain, with focus on abdominal and volume status exams.
- To review important causes of upper and lower GI bleed in adult patients.
- To practice using likelihood ratios from the JAMA Rational Clinical Exam Article Is This Adult Patient Hypovolemic to formulate a post-test probability of hypovolemia in this case.
- To review the different kinds of shock (hypovolemic, cardiogenic, obstructive and distributive).
- To practice using likelihood ratios from the JAMA Rational Clinical Exam Article Does this patient have a severe upper gastrointestinal bleed to formulate a post-test probability of upper GI bleed and its severity in this case.
- To discuss initial next steps including investigations for acute GI bleed, and initial resuscitative measures.
- To practice disclosing a serious acute illness and need for admission to hospital.
