To practice nutrition in medicine, it is essential to have a basic understanding of the biochemistry, physiology and pathophysiology of nutrients, the derivation and sources of recommended daily nutrient intakes (called Dietary Reference Intakes in Canada and the USA) and approaches to nutritional assessment.
