Activity Objectives
- To practice a history and physical exam for headache, with focus on screening neurological exam and meningismus signs.
- To review primary versus secondary headache disorders, and important red flags for headache (using SNNOOP10 mnemonic).
- To practice using likelihood ratios from the JAMA Rational Clinical Exam Article Does This Adult Patient Have Acute Meningitis to formulate a post-test probability of acute meningitis in this case.
- To review clinical factors which would prompt a CT Scan before Lumbar Puncture (using FAILS mnemonic).
- To discuss initial next steps in management including investigations in workup for acute meningitis, and empiric antibiotics.
- To review confidentiality as it pertains to mandatory reportable communicable diseases in this case.
